May 2021: Day at the Bay

Over 30 members made the drive across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to enjoy the hospitality of a member who owns a house in St. Michaels. What a delightful day boating, playing badminton, eating and drinking, and just enjoying seeing one another in person after a year of COVID restrictions!

 

May 2021: MBR District Gold Awards

We’re taking a moment to pat ourselves on the back. MBR’s members have always known we’re a great club. Now we’re tickled to report that Rotary District 7620 has awarded us its highest honors (Bronze is the top level in environmental this year). Thanks to all of the members who’ve worked hard to keep us active and engaged during this challenging year!

 

Mar 2021: International Women’s Day

On March 4, 2021, for our International Women’s Day Celebration, MBR welcomed guest speaker Rotary Foundation Trustee Geeta Manek. Geeta expressed her gratitude and told us about some of her extraordinary humanitarian work and life experiences through her several decades of Rotary leadership positions in Kenya and internationally.
We’re all longing for the day we can celebrate IWD in person again. Until then, relive our 2020 IWD Event at the World Bank.

 

Dec 2020: Nourishing Bethesda for the Holidays

Thanks to MBR members who participated in the Nourishing Bethesda food distribution in December. 270 families were served before the food ran out.

Sept 2020: Feed the Need

We’re gratified to report that we’ve donated 250 delicious meals from Ooh’s & Aah’s to Casa Ruby, a DC-based LGBT Community Center. This project is part of MBR’s Feed the Need initiative, which supports local restaurants while providing meals to underserved communities. Over the past several months, we’ve also provided 80 meals to the Greentree Shelter, an emergency shelter that’s part of the National Center for Children and Families, and another 80 to local first responders. Thank you for continuing to support Feed the Need!

August 2021: Assisting Afghan Refugee Families

Like many of you, MBR has watched with concern as the dire situation in Afghanistan has unfolded. We’re currently supporting two newly-arriving families with whom we have a personal connection get set up in apartments. We’re also supporting several other big projects to help Afghan refugees.

June 2021: Recognition of 2020-21 President Clara Montanez

MBR members gathered for a special event at the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC to recognize 2020-21 MBR President Clara Montanez’s contributions to the Club.

May 2021: Mt Zion Cemetery Clean-up

MBR members joined members of the Washington DC Rotary Club to clean up Mt Zion Cemetery, a historically significant Black cemetery in Georgetown.

Apr 2021: Nourishing Bethesda

Grocery bags for 300 households = 1300 people with fresh food for 3+ days. MBR members were out in force helping with a local food distribution project in MoCo. Thanks to the Nourishing Bethesda team who’s made it happen week after week since August!

Jan 2021: MBR Goes Social!

MBR members managed to have a COVID safe social event for those of us who craved social interaction. Thanks to Russell and Xan who offered up their yard and screened-in porch for us to enjoy!

About a dozen Metro Bethesda Rotarians and friends recently (and safely) got out to clean a local stream at Ray’s Meadow Park.

We’re back at our “new” home, Jose Andres’ Spanish Diner, after a month at the BCC Rescue Squad and a month at the Battery Park Club House! Join us in person or on Zoom. Thanks to everyone who made our in-person and hybrid meeting format a reality!

June 2021: Books for Head Start

MBR recently wrapped up a signature project – providing 13 books each for 650 Montgomery County Headstart students — 8,450 books total. Club members (safely) gathered to put in bookplates and assemble packages of collected books for distribution.

Apr 2021: Cherry Blossom Walk

MBR members took a stroll around Kenwood’s beautiful cherry blossoms. Great exercise and fellowship!

Dec 2020: Interact Club Wraps Toys

The MBR Interact Club wrapped 98 toys and had a tailgate for the holiday season!

Nov 2020: Thanksgiving Meal Distribution

Metro Bethesda Rotary and BCC Rotary joined together to provide Thanksgiving meals to 180 local families in need — over 450 adults and kids. We distributed food and gift cards. Over 30 Rotarians and family members participated.

Sept 2020: Purple Tee Raises Funds for Vets Orgs

The Purple Tee was a great success this year, raising a record amount of funds for SMGA, Team River Runner, and the Metro Bethesda Rotary Foundation. Special thanks to the Purple Tee Committee who coordinated this huge event under difficult COVID circumstances — including our first online auction!
